Drawing Dance
It wasn't until the pandemic and I was on my own drawing online with Luke Brown's drawing bodies in motion workshops on a Sunday for an hour, that I realised fully what in the moment drawing and trusting the process, really meant in practice. It was just me, my laptop and drawing tools, the movement and colors on the screen, the music, and the making of quick, rapid decisions. No time to think but just respond to what I was seeing and feeling. The music played a huge part in how I would respond, what colours I would use and shapes I would make.
No distractions, just a connection with the music and movement. I felt my body responded as though I too was dancing. I trained in dance so in my mind I was dancing too and in the movement of my hand, arm, body.
There was enough time pressure to create something to show the other participants at the end of the hour. It was brilliant. It was possible to shut out all other thoughts completely and fully give the moment the attention needed, to be totally absorbed in the act of drawing. Nothing else mattered for that moment in time. I was completely in flow.
